John Ramos’ inscrutable expression becomes even more unreadable in his faceless self-portrait ‘Magritte’s Pipe.’ While paying his respects to the Belgian artist in this surreal work, Ramos exhibits his own dry wit, inserting icons that express his California surfer sensibilities, such as the octopus arm reaching for the margarita. The many illusions in the painting include the vertical flowers on the shirt’s front that resemble a spinal cord.
